About the Speaker
Dr. Changhyun Kim
Assistant Professor of Strategy, CEIBS
Dr. Chang Hyun Kim is an Assistant Professor of Strategy at CEIBS. Prior to joining CEIBS, Dr. Kim was an Assistant Professor of Strategic Management of Lee Kong Chian School of Business at Singapore Management University.
Dr. Chang Hyun Kim received his Ph.D. and Master in Business Administration at University of North Carolina Chapel Hill in 2014 and 2009 respectively. He also holds a Master and Bachelor degree in B.A from Yonsei University. His research interests mainly concentrate on corporate governance, innovation and knowledge management. Dr. Kim’s teaching interests focus on strategic management, corporate strategy, and global strategy. In addition, Dr. Kim also has substantial working experience as a consultant and senior managers at LG Economic Research Institute and LG Corporation, respectively.
Dr. Chang Hyun Kim serves as the editorial review board member at Strategic Management Journal. He published papers in Strategic Management Journal, Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal and Corporate Governance: An International Review.
Dr. Chang Hyun Kim was also awarded the First Prize in the 3rd Shanghai MBA Case Teaching Competition held in 2019.

About the Event
South Korea, one of the Four Asian Tigers (together with Singapore, Hong-Kong, Taiwan), underwent rapid industrialization and developed into one of advanced economies. While Singapore and Hong-Kong became world-leading financial and business service centres, Korea became one of world leaders in fast-moving technology sectors, such as semi-conductor, display, rechargeable battery and automobile. During this phenomenal economic success, major Korean firms, such as Samsung, Hyundai, and LG, transformed themselves from regional dark horses to global champions in multiple industries. Their unique ownership and governance structures are called Chaebol (財閥), a form of Conglomerate. The Chaebols have taken a strategy of (fast) followers rather than first mover or original creator. By leveraging their diversified business structure and centralized decision-making style, Chaebols have overcome the typical weaknesses of followers such as time compression diseconomies and uncertainty in strategic investments. As Chinese firms emerge and develop, however, traditional (fast) follower strategy reveals its own limitations too. Chaebols are exploring diverse new paths for sustainable growth in the future.
Recently, as these explorative moves are undertaken by the Chaebol, a new breed of Korean companies has emerged in soft sectors such as entertainment and beauty industry. Unlike traditional Chaebol, they have taken a strategy of being the first mover, and part of their innovation consists of shaping a new set of rules. Rather than adapting to the set of consumer perceptions shaped by western companies, those firms reshape consumers’ perceptions on culture and beauty. That trend is driven by the wave called ‘Hanryu (韓流)’ which refers to the growing popularity of South Korean Culture such as Korean Movies, TV dramas/soaps, and musicians in China and Southeast Asia. While entertainment industries are the initial engines of Hanryu, Korean beauty or food/beverage sectors widen the breadth and reinforce the depth of the Hanryu.
