Anne Hathaway’s The Idea of You, Amazon Prime Video’s latest rom-com feature, continues an exceptional Rotten Tomatoes streak for one of its stars. Not to mention, the film builds upon the streamer’s 2024 romantic comedy success, which began with the release of Camila Mendes’ Upgraded. Directed and co-written by Michael Showalter (Wet Hot American Summer), The Idea of You chronicles the unexpected love affair that blossoms between a newly single mother and gallery owner, Solène Marchand (Hathaway), and Hayes Campbell (Nicholas Galitzine), the lead singer of a hugely popular boy band called August Moon.

Based on Robinne Lee’s novel of the same name, The Idea of You begins with Solène taking her teenage daughter, Izzy (Ella Rubin), and her friends to Coachella. The desert-based, multi-day music festival unfolds a few days before Solène’s 40th birthday, but she doesn’t feel particularly pressed to celebrate. While trying to find a VIP bathroom, Hathaway’s character stumbles into Hayes’ trailer. Taken aback by Solène’s down-to-earth view of him, the 24-year-old Hayes tracks down Solène’s gallery in Los Angeles. After sharing an art-filled afternoon, the two begin The Idea of You‘s age-gap romance.

Galitzine’s Last Three Movies All Received Rave Reviews

After landing roles in a string of underwhelming films, including The Craft: Legacy and Cinderella (2021), relative newcomer Nicholas Galitzine appeared in several acclaimed comedies. The Purple Hearts star had breakout moments on both streaming and in theaters in 2023 with the dual release of Red, White & Royal Blue, a queer rom-com based on Casey McQuiston’s bestselling novel, and Bottoms, a queer teen sex comedy starring Rachel Sennott and Ayo Edebiri. In the former, Galitzine plays Prince Henry, a would-be heir to the British throne who falls for Alex Claremont-Diaz (Taylor Zakhar Perez), the first son of the President of the US.

While there’s a clear link between Galitzine’s Idea of You character and his press-adverse prince in Red, White & Royal Blue, the actor’s star-making role in Bottoms is much different. A satirical look at high school movie tropes, Bottoms sees Galitzine playing Jeff — the charming quarterback that everyone in town seems to worship. Easy to hate, Jeff is more than a one-note bully because of Galitzine’s committed performance. Undoubtedly, he brings his easy charm and comedic chops to Anne Hathaway’s The Idea of You, and continues an impressive certified fresh streak on Rotten Tomatoes with yet another comedy.

Galitzine & Hathaway’s Chemistry Bolsters The Idea Of You

Although the wry Red, White & Royal Blue becomes a bit melodramatic as the plot unfolds, co-stars Perez and Galitzine help the film soar thanks to their undeniable chemistry. The film no doubt has its flaws and missteps, from clunky dialogue to its overly fairy-tale flourishes. However, Galitzine and his co-lead capture the playful kind of easy escapism viewers want from a rom-com. The Idea of You hits similar notes. Much like Red, White & Royal Blue, The Idea of You‘s premise sounds like fan fiction, but Galitzine and Hathaway elevate the material.

After their first not-date at Solène’s gallery, the pair share a quiet moment. Hayes confesses that becoming a hugely popular boy band member isn’t without its own pains; no one takes him or his music seriously. Being considered nothing more than a joke — or “so seventh grade” — is Hayes Campbell’s biggest fear. Meanwhile, Solène, whose husband cheated on her, is afraid to be truly vulnerable. Much like Hayes, she doesn’t want to be the woman everyone is whispering about — she doesn’t want to be a joke either. While Hathaway and Galitzine are both funny and warm, it’s this shared vulnerability that elevates their chemistry and connection.

While Jeff is awful to those around him, Galitzine perfectly captures the fragility beneath his bully facade. Between Bottoms and a rom-com like The Idea of You, Nicholas Galitzine has made his mark on the comedy genre as a whole.
